I've heard it was three Trans Ams and two LeManses, but I've also heard it the other way around.
Pontiac supplied 5 brand-new cars for "Smokey and the Bandit". In fact, the light blue was almost the exact same shade as the light blue used on the cop cars later on in the movie. But right away, it reminded me of the police cars in SATB. Just the other day, they brought in a light blue 1977 Pontiac LeMans in MINT condition, other than the fact it had just been rolled. On a side note, there is a local garage in town that stores wrecked vehicles while they wait on the insurance claims adjustors. Pontiac was probably spending a lot of money on product placement with all the new Pontiacs in this film. Hey guys, don't you think that's amazing to destroy a car from 1977 in a '77 movie? There is also a LeMans as an Alabama State Trooper who was trying to apprehend the Bandit when "Eastbound and Down" music was playing. There is also a couple of Lemans Georgia State Vehicles.
But then in later scenes, sometimes the front of the car is fine, and sometimes it has varying degrees of damage. For instance, when he rear-ends Sherriff Brandford's car and pushes him off the bridge, it buckles the hood and smashes some of the trim up front. And then by the time the car loses its roof, that rear quarter panel is totally gone.Īlso, the damage to the front of the car appears inconsistent in some cases. And then in other shots it seems to be fine. Then in a later scene the rear quarter panel has black primer paint on it. In the scene where Buford tries to pass the Snowman, clips his rig, loses control, and get smacked in the side, it does some minor damage to the LeMans. It looses the roof, a door, the muffler, another door and the right front wheel.Īt one point early on, the right rear quarter panel comes off of the car, but they're inconsistent about this, as they used several different '77 LeManses in this movie. LOL, then you wouldn't be able to recognize the car. Sum 1 should have pictures of this Smokey Bear gettin' teared apart.
